Sixth and minor seventh chords

by Bill on January 21, 2010

Next in the series of videos on harmony is a short overview of sixth and minor seventh chords. These are pretty interesting because they are closely related to each other.

A major sixth chord contains the same notes as the minor seventh based on the root note of the relative minor. To put it slightly more plainly, if you build a major 6th based on root note I and a minor seventh based on root note VI, they will share the same constituent notes.

It all get a lot plainer if you just watch the vid. It also contains information on minor sixth (m6) chords.

Like all the videos in this series, this one is designed to tie in with the section on harmony in my book, How To Really Play The Piano

If you have any questions about sixths, minor sevenths or any other chords, go right ahead and ask.
