Home recording basics - postscript

by Bill on May 3, 2009

To round off what Graeme was saying in his series of three posts on home recording basics (links: part one, part two and part three) I’ve shot a short video of my own home recording setup so you can see how some of this stuff works in practice.

One thing I didn’t mention in the video is the question of speakers. In the background you can see a Sony SRS-BT100 Bluetooth speaker unit. I don’t use this for mixing purposes. In general, because most of the stuff I do is quite simple (typically voice and piano) I get away with just using headphones - an old pair of Sony MDRs.

I do have some powered speakers tucked away in a cupboard, so I might dig them out and include some shots one of these days. Basically, they take a stereo line out from the back of the Edirol digital audio interface, and it’s simply a question of setting my Mac to use the Edirol for sound output rather than using internal sound and plugging the headphones straight into the Mac - which Graeme would probably tell you is baaaaad.

Update: you can listen to a sample of what this setup can achieve with minimal preparation and tweaking here.
