Changing the bass note of a chord can radically alter the sound of the whole harmony. Knowing which bass notes (or “bass voicing”) to use can be very useful if you’re after particular effects in your playing.
This video is based around the piano (and ties in with my book, How To Really Play The Piano) but you can apply the principle of bass voicing to playing the guitar, too - and it can also come in handy if you’re writing or arranging music for bands or choirs.
Note the tiny snafu at 0:53, when I refer to the C triad as “first inversion” when it’s in fact in root position. It didn’t seem worth reshooting the section, so I’ve just added a reminder in a caption.
If you have a question about bass voicings or any other aspect of chords or harmony, post it in the comments and I’ll get right back to you.
